Ready to move from pilot to production?

Let's talk about where you are today — and how we can help you scale AI that actually delivers.

Book a Discovery Call

There is no single winner. Infor LN is built for complex discrete and project-driven manufacturing. SAP offers S/4HANA for larger or growing multi-entity firms and Business One for smaller operations. Microsoft Dynamics 365 suits firms already on Microsoft tools. The right fit depends on how complex your production is, what you run today, and how strong the local partner is.

This guide is for CFOs and COOs at manufacturers in the Rs 1,000 to 2,000 crore range who are shortlisting an ERP. We implement and modernise SAP, Infor LN and Microsoft Dynamics, so we have no reason to push one. Every vendor claim below links to the vendor's own pages.

Infor LN vs SAP vs Dynamics: the comparison table

For most mid-size manufacturers, the deciding rows are manufacturing depth and partner strength, not feature counts. All three cover finance, purchasing, inventory and production, and all three support India GST. The table below shows where they differ, based on what each vendor publishes.

Table comparing Infor LN, SAP S/4HANA and Business One, and Microsoft Dynamics 365 on manufacturing depth, multi-site, cost drivers, India GST, partners and AI readiness.

Note: Business Central and Finance and Supply Chain Management are different products. Business Central is the smaller-scope product; Finance and Supply Chain Management is the larger one. Treat them as two separate options on your shortlist.

A quick way to decide

Start with your production model, then your existing stack, then the partner. If your work is engineer to order or long projects, look hardest at Infor LN. If you already run SAP or need a global template, start with SAP. If your teams live in Microsoft 365 and Power BI, start with Dynamics.

Decision tree: if production is engineer to order or project based, shortlist Infor LN. If not, and the group already runs SAP or needs a global SAP template, shortlist SAP S/4HANA, or Business One for a smaller unit. If the company is standardised on Microsoft 365 and Power BI, shortlist Dynamics 365, choosing Business Central for simpler operations or Finance and Supply Chain Management for multi-entity or mixed-mode production. In every case, check local partner depth before deciding.

When Infor LN fits

Infor LN fits manufacturers with complex discrete or project-driven production: engineer to order, configure to order, long-lead items and multi-site operations. Infor says LN's primary focus is discrete manufacturing, and its project control module handles estimating, customised BOMs and routings, and network planning per customer order.

Infor lists aerospace and defence, automotive, high tech, industrial manufacturing, and engineering and construction among LN's industries (Infor). For each customer project, LN can hold customised bills of material and routings, plan long-lead purchases and estimate capacity (Infor docs). It runs on-premises or as a multi-tenant cloud on AWS, per Infor.

Points to check: LN partner references near your plants (ask each partner for plant-region references), and whether your team will use project control fully. A make-to-stock plant with simple routings may be paying for depth it does not need.

When SAP fits

SAP fits when your group already runs SAP, when a parent or customer expects an SAP template, or when you want one vendor across finance, supply chain and HR. S/4HANA suits multi-entity growth, and SAP positions Business One for small and midsize firms, including light manufacturing. The two are different products.

SAP describes S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition as a standardised public cloud with preconfigured best-practice processes, and a Private Edition with more room to extend (SAP). Business One covers accounting, purchasing, inventory, sales and reporting, with MRP for purchase and production recommendations (SAP).

Points to check: whether your processes fit the public cloud's standard scope, or whether you need the Private Edition. For Business One, check that its production features match your routings and shop-floor needs.

When Dynamics fits

Dynamics 365 fits manufacturers already standardised on Microsoft 365, Teams and Power BI. Business Central covers production BOMs, routings and production orders for simpler operations. Finance and Supply Chain Management adds discrete, process and lean manufacturing in one mixed-mode setup, for multi-entity or more complex plants.

Microsoft documents that Business Central manufacturing needs the Premium experience (Microsoft Learn). Supply Chain Management supports production orders, batch orders for formula-based production, kanbans and manufacturing projects in one flow (Microsoft Learn). Firms on Dynamics NAV have a documented upgrade path to Business Central India (Microsoft Learn).

Points to check: which of the two products you are being quoted, and whether your production complexity has outgrown Business Central. For planning methods, see our piece on MPS vs MRP vs APS for mid-size manufacturers.

Getting AI value after go-live

Choosing the ERP is half the job. AI pays back when stock, orders and costs are recorded in the ERP the same day, with clean item and supplier masters. All three vendors now ship AI features, but each one depends on the data your team puts in. Plan data readiness into the project, not after it.

We wrote a 7-point ERP readiness check for AI that applies to any of these systems. One example from our own work: a food-service distributor in India on Microsoft Dynamics NAV. We built live stock dashboards with a freshness view, and forecast-triggered reorders written back to NAV. The result was 18% less perishable wastage, a 96% fill rate and Rs 1.2 crore added margin.

ERP data flows into live dashboards and forecasts, and approved reorders flow back into the ERP.

For production planning on top of the ERP, see how mid-size manufacturers schedule production with AI. For dashboards, see our business intelligence and analytics work.

How we work

We implement and modernise SAP, Infor LN and Microsoft Dynamics. We start with your production model and data, not a preferred vendor. A typical sequence is a fit-gap on your top processes, a data readiness review, then implementation or modernisation, then dashboards and AI on top.

More detail is on our ERP implementation and modernisation page.

FAQ

What drives the cost of an ERP for a mid-size manufacturer?

The main drivers are licence or subscription, implementation scope, customisation, data migration, integrations, training and ongoing support. Customisation and data clean-up usually decide how far a project moves from its first estimate. Ask each vendor and partner to price the same scripted scope so the quotes are comparable.

How long does an ERP migration take?

It depends on scope, number of sites and data quality. We have not found a vendor-published range for a mid-size manufacturer that we can cite here, so we do not quote one. Ask shortlisted partners for timelines from comparable projects, in writing, with scope attached.

Can we keep our old ERP and add AI?

Often, yes. If the current ERP is supported and can share data through APIs or scheduled feeds, you can add dashboards, forecasts and alerts on top. Our NAV distributor example did exactly this. Replace the ERP when it is unsupported, cannot connect, or forces core work outside it.

Do Infor LN, SAP and Dynamics support India GST?

Yes, each vendor documents India GST support. Infor LN has India localisation with GST and e-invoicing settings. SAP has a Country India version for S/4HANA and a GST guide for Business One. Microsoft documents GST for Business Central and for Dynamics 365 Finance.

Which is easiest to integrate with BI?

Microsoft publishes Power BI apps for Business Central, which helps if you already use Power BI. SAP points to SAP BTP and Integration Suite, and Infor lists advanced analytics for LN. In practice, ease depends on your BI tool and data model more than the ERP brand.
